The Northwest Coin Club celebrated National Coin Week 2014 by setting up a display at the Brookdale Public Library in Brooklyn Center, MN. The library was kind enough to give us not just one long table, but a few extra round tables so that we had a good sized area to visit with kids and adults alike. They even rounded up library books on coin collecting and had a separate table to display them on. A few members of the club spent the afternoon chatting with some pretty excited kids who had never seen coins or currency the likes of what was being shared. A very colorful display of “Disney Dollars” was enticing enough, but when our Club President showed up with boxes full of free coin giveaways –well, things got pretty exciting to say the least. The kids couldn’t keep their eyes (and hands) off the shiny, gold colored special edition State Quarters, and our plan to limit them to one per kid was quickly abandoned. But by far the biggest hit of the day was a massive pile of world coins that just begged to be touched and studied. Anyone who could use the accompanying world coin books to positively identify where the coin was from could keep the coin! This proved to be as much fun for the club members as it was for the kids and their parents who helped. Our mission to simply to expose a few young kids to coin collecting seemed quite a successful first try! Click on the photos below for larger view
