Sex, Coins and William Wood:
Making Small Change in the 18th Century -- by Franklin Noel ... In the early 18th Century, England’s American colonies suffered a severe shortage of small change that was necessary to conduct everyday transactions. Ireland suffered a similar coin shortage. William Wood, whose family owned several copper and iron mines, thought he had a solution to both problems. But first he had to navigate the sexual politics of the newly installed Hanoverian king of England, George I. Though both of his coin projects were deemed economic failures in their day, Wood did produce some very attractive coins for both the American colonies and for Ireland, all of which are actively sought by collectors of American colonial coins. 21st century numismatist, Sydney Martin, before he died in 2021, wrote two books that revitalized interest in both Wood’s Irish coins as well as the ones he struck for use in England’s American colonies. Drawing on Martin’s research, this presentation will introduce you to the coins of William Wood. ---------------------------- Note: November is the month for NWCC members to bring their coins that are to be auctioned during our December meeting. ---------------------------- After the presentation, for those who choose to stay... We will be holding a "coin activity." As just stated, this month's activity is a catch-up for the previous two months: show-and-tell an Olympic item or a Civil War token. The activity will be announced in the NWCC newsletter that is emailed the weekend before our meeting. We meet at the Plymouth Community Center, 14800 34th Ave N, Plymouth, MN 55447 |

the Northwest Coin Club
Our local club has a rich history in the promotion of coin collecting and the education of Minnesota collectors. Founded in 1934, the NWCC is the oldest coin club in the Minneapolis - Saint Paul area and thought to be the 2nd oldest “regularly meeting” club in the entire country!
Education is the main reason our club exists and we are committed to providing local enthusiasts with the best and most current information available.
If you are a serious collector - or just thinking about becoming serious - joining a local coin club can be the best step towards enriching your hobby of numismatics. But don’t let the word “serious” scare you. The NWCC is comprised mostly of true hobbyists who collect coins and currency simply for the joy of it. We are not primarily focused on “turning a quick profit” from our endeavors, but on learning long-term strategies, best practices and especially on having lots of fun along the way.
If you are a coin collector in the Twin Cities Metro area, we encourage you to attend one of our monthly meetings and experience the camaraderie, fellowship and education offered by the Northwest Coin Club!
